British Values
Fundamental British Values have been implicitly embedded in the EYFS since 2014.
Democracy, Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect and Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs are British Values that are at the heart of APN's ethos and are the values that underpin our practice.
Democracy- making decisions together.
Children are provided with opportunities to develop their self-confidence and self-awareness (PSED) by providing a learning environment that is conductive to children making own choices and decisions about what they want to explore in play and how they are going to use the resources accessible to them. The child's voice matters, permeating in our planning floor books, learning journeys and learning spaces. We encourage children to share and collaborate in making decisions together and listening to each other. Everyone has equal rights and are treated equally.
The Rule of Law - understanding that rules matter.
We support children in learning how to manage own feelings and behaviour (PSED) by using simple and consistent rules -Golden Rules- that have been discussed and agreed by children and staff. We model behaviour following those rules and we continuously reinforce them. We teach children that actions have consequences and we make sure that time is taken to explain to children how something they have done might have made another child feel. It is about learning how to behave within agreed and clearly defined boundaries and learning how to deal with the consequences.
Individual Liberty - freedom of speech and the right to make choices.
Children are actively encouraged to make choices, play and learning is child-led and children are encouraged and supported in exploring and developing own interests and schemas.
Mutual Respect and Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs -
an ethos of inclusivity and tolerance where different views, faiths, cultures and races are valued and celebrated (UW).
Respect for others is imbedded in our practice and reiterated through our setting and learning environment. We endeavor to equip our children with the ability to embrace, understand and celebrate each others cultural backgrounds, faiths, beliefs and ways of being by exposing them to a cultural diverse curriculum, learning environment and life experiences.
